Music is such a wonderful teaching tool and brings so much joy to families. There are so many benefits when it comes to singing with your child or baby, we have picked five of our favourites to share with you.
- Singing teaches communication skills
When singing, your child will use their listening, speaking and action skills and this can hugely support their communication development.
Singing helps children to develop fluency of oral communication skills. It offers an opportunity to be vocal in a controlled way and helps children to listen attentively and to produce a variety of sounds.
- Singing helps with brain development
When your child learns to sing along to their favourite songs, it’s a great way to develop their memory. They will remember lyrics to songs as well as the tunes. Have a think about how many songs you know off by heart! This works with our children too. Singing can also help build concentration, especially when singing as part of a group, a class, or even just with your family.
- Singing increases your child-parent bond
When you sing with a child you will incorporate touch, holding, cuddles, rocking and patting with your songs. You will also use eye contact, smiling and nodding. These activities help to promote a child’s development by strengthening the bond between parent and child. Singing to your child makes them happy. When you sing, they bond with your voice and with you! Think of all the smiles you get when you are singing together with your child. It’s just wonderful!
- Singing helps keep you healthy
Singing releases endorphins that make you feel happy which is fantastic for your mental health and overall mood, but did you know singing can help build your immune system? It is also an aerobic activity! Think of how you breath when you are singing, it forces us to breath deeply which increases the amount of oxygen that’s taken into our bodies. Incredible right?!
- Music can improve numeracy skills
Songs such as ‘Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer’ and ‘Ten Green Bottles’ are a great way to help your child count. Singing songs with numbers in them, teaches your child how to count, add and subtract. These rhymes are great for singing together, from counting forwards to 10, and also backwards, these rhymes will help young children become familiar with numbers in a fun and memorable way.
Kidshealth.org, is quoted in saying:
“Children who grow up hearing music, singing songs, and moving to the beat are enjoying what experts call “a rich sensory environment.” That’s just a fancy way of saying a child is exposed to a wide variety of tastes, smells, textures, colours, and sounds. And kids who enjoy such a rich environment do more than have fun. Researchers believe they forge more pathways between the cells in their brains.”
